Course overview

Although many organizations are aware of the importance of an engaging corporate philosophy and set of values, the methods for disseminating this message are primarily focused on one-way communications such as ways to cascade the message from the top and methods to make employees learn the organization’s set of values.

However, this kind of top-down communication of values is seldom effective. The key to establishing a shared set of values among all employees is for each employee to first clarify and communicate his or her own set of values. When individuals recognize that the organization’s values are aligned or relate in some meaningful way to their own values then the organization will have truly communicated its philosophy.

Instilling corporate philosophy and values can often be viewed as companies simply imposing their values on the employees. However, it should be a process of drawing out the work life values (what is important and a priority) of employees and enabling them to make personal connections to what is important and a priority for the organization. Only when the employees are given an opportunity to do this, can corporate philosophy be said to have been truly communicated and instilled in the hearts and minds of members of the organization.
